چکیده

The authors give the exact coefficient of 1/N in a saddlepoint approximation to the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney null-distribution. This saddlepoint approximation is obtained from an Edgeworth approximation to the exponentially tilted distribution. Moreover, the rate of convergence of the relative error is uniformly of order O(1/N) in a large deviation interval as defined in Feller (1971). The proposed method for computing the coefficient of 1/N can be used to obtain the exact coefficients of 1/N , for any i. The exact formulas for the cumulant generating function and the cumulants, needed for these results, are those of van Dantzig (1947-1950).

A data-adaptive methodology for finding an optimal weighted generalized Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon statistic

Xie and Priebe [2002. “Generalizing the Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon Statistic”. J. Nonparametric Statist. 12, 661–682] introduced the class of weighted generalized Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon (WGMWW) statistics which contained as special cases the classical Mann–Whitney test statistic and many other nonparametric distribution-free test statistics commonly used for the two-sample testing problem. The two-sa...

The Mann Whitney Wilcoxon Distribution Using Linked Lists

We give an improved algorithm for calculating the exact null distribution of the two sample Mann Whitney Wilcoxon rank sum statistic. The algorithm modifies the update method of Smid using a minimal linked list which directs calculation of only those intermediate probabilities required for the final value. Using an efficient shortened representation of the list of required intermediate values, ...

On the Permutation Distribution of Independence Tests

One of the most popular class of tests for independence between two random variables is the general class of rank statistics which are invariant under permutations. This class contains Spearman’s coefficient of rank correlation statistic, Fisher-Yates statistic, weighted Mann statistic and others. Under the null hypothesis of independence these test statistics have a permutation distribution th...

Effects attributable to treatment: Inference in experiments and observational studies with a discrete pivot

In randomisation and permutation inference, pivotal arguments remove the hypothesised treatment effect, thereby basing inferences on the null distribution in which the treatment has no effect. This is common, for instance, with additive treatment effects. The current paper uses ‘attributable effects’ to expand substantially the scope of pivotal arguments. Attributable effects are defined for th...

A random-sum Wilcoxon statistic and its application to analysis of ROC and LROC data.

The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney statistic is commonly used for a distribution-free comparison of two groups. One requirement for its use is that the sample sizes of the two groups are fixed. This is violated in some of the applications such as medical imaging studies and diagnostic marker studies; in the former, the violation occurs since the number of correctly localized abnormal images is random, w...
